POST-YOUTH

3 tunes from a relatively new, revolution summer emo band from Leeds doing it right. This EP clicked with me a lot more than their previous 7″ Daydreams – catchier tunes and guitars are smoother.

Pink and Brown were a 2-piece band brought up in Providence, RI. When they formed they moved to San Francisco and began making noise punk. Final Foods was their debut full length released on ToYo records. Their live shows were infamous for guaranteed chaos and debauchery that i wish i could have been a part of. Unfortunately they disbanded in 2003 by announcing that “Mommy and daddy still love you but they just can’t stay married. We hope this doesn’t put a damper on your childhood but we think you’ll be just fine.” on their message board.

I’ve been meaning to post this for quite a while but only just got a half decent rip of it. Gentle Friendly is a duo originally from Birmingham, who now reside in the big smoke of London. Their sound blends glitchy electronics with stripped back percussion and (as odd as it may seem) an organ. The record hums and chugs along with machine-like insistency with pounding rhythm and echoing, dream-like vocals, fluctuating between rawkus fuzz and more gentle reflections, such as in should-be hit anthem “Lovers Rock”.

Joy Orbison is the brainchild of Croydon based producer Pete O’Grady. I find it hard to pin down O’Grady’s sound, but it floats between deep house, garage and dubstep. With last year’s release of his first official record, the dubstep magnum opus  HYPH MNGO, O’Grady made major waves on the electronic music scene and he looks set to blow up this year with the possible release of a full length album. But in the meantime O’Grady brings us this digital release to keep the seat warm as it were. The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow has a similar flavour to HYPH MNGO, with claustrophobic synths undulating around choppy vocal samples and deep bass, but there is definitely a more garage feel to this compared to the previous release. The same can also be said for the B-side So Derobe, which carries on in a similar vein. However there is no denying O’Grady’s compositional prowess and ability to make music that just sounds right for what it is…if that makes any sense at all – i hope it does when you listen to it.

This is a nostalgic record for me. I first heard of Tokyo Police Club when my friend Coombs mentioned them to me in – if my memory serves me – a history lesson in year 10. I flippantly disregarded them due to just their name (erroneous on my part), but when Coombs brought out his ipod and played me Nature Of The Experiment i took the hate back and began a love affair with this EP. The recording is pretty brash, the guitars shriek and the drums are pounded but the youthful exuberance and obvious songwriting ability shines through.

Fair Ohs are three chipper young lads from London. This record shows an almost metamorphic sonic transformation from the snotty punk of previous releases to what i hesitantly would describe as afrobeat pop – jaunty rhythms and keen-edged guitar melodies which ripple away like the pacific ocean. I think it suits them and by the sounds of “Hey Lizzie”, a track taken from the soon to be released split with Spectrals, they are sticking with the tropical vibes.

Heron is a political poet and soul musician, whose records blur the distinction between spoken word pieces and structured songs. His unique style, to this day unrivalled, went on to aid in the establishment of genres like hip-hop and neo soul. Pieces Of A Man is his second studio album and the first to show a cohesive structure in terms of an album of tunes. I discovered Heron’s music a couple of months ago out of pure coincidence - thanks to a friend with a handsome family vinyl collection – without any knowledge of the new album, released in February after a 10 year hiatus. I am more than psyched to hear that record.
